The Christian Heart
The first 12 verses of I Peter 1 are just one very long sentence in the original. It’s the longest sentence in the New Testament.
v. 3 – You’ve been born again unto a living hope.
v. 4 – Your inheritance is reserved for you in heaven.
v. 5 – You’re kept by the power of God through faith.
v. 6 You rejoice even though you face severe trials.
v. 7 Your trials are your preparation for your glory.
v. 8 You love Somebody you’ve never seen.
v. 10 – Your salvation is the same salvation as the one preached by the prophets of the OT.

A Christian is a person whose mind and heart are dominated by the ideas and words of Jesus Christ.
HOPE
1. Your mind needs your attention.
2. Your mind needs to be sober.
Mark 5:3 “He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain. 4 He had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but had snapped the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one could tame him. 5 He kept screaming night and day among the tombs and on the mountainsides, and kept cutting himself with stones.” 8 Jesus had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 Then Jesus asked him, “What’s your name?” He told him, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us.” 14 So the people went to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there dressed and in his right mind, they were frightened.16 The people who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. 17 So they began to beg Jesus to leave their territory.”
I Peter 1:13 “preparing your mind for action.”
1. Your mind needs your attention. “Never act in a panic; nor allow man to dictate to you; calm yourself and be still; force yourself into the quiet of your closet until the pulse beats normally and the scare has ceased to perturb (cause anxiety). When you are most eager to act is the time when you will make the most pitiable mistakes.” (F. B. Meyer)

I Peter 1 and John 20
I Peter 1:10 “Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels desire to look into.”
“Bewildered”
John 20:1 “On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus loved (the Apostle John). She told them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put Him!” 3 So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb. 4 The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn’t go in. 6 At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there, 7 and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus’ head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place.”

“The Angel Who Couldn’t Look Away”

I Peter 1:8 “Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
I Peter 1:10 – 11“Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify [make clear], when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.”
I Peter 1:10 & 12 “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you… 12 which things the angels desire to look into.” “Curiosity killed the cat.”
l Peter 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify [make clear], when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ [Messiah], and the glory that should follow.”
What did these curious investigators ask about?
1. LORD, Who is this suffering figure I’m writing about?
2. LORD, when?
3. LORD, how can suffering produce salvation?
4. LORD, who are the ones who will receive this grace?
Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
Revelation 22:21 “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”
“The Problem With Prayer”

Luke 11:1 “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
How many times did Jesus talk to His disciples about praying?
1. The LORD’s prayer; Luke 11.
2. Don’t be a hypocrite when you pray; Matthew 6:5-8.
3. The joy of persistence in prayer – Luke 11.
4. Humility- Luke 18:9-14.
Reverence: “Hallowed be Thy name.” Submission to God’s will: “Thy will be done.”
Dependence: “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Forgiveness: “Forgive our sins as we forgive others.”
Spiritual protection: “Deliver us from evil.”
Secrecy /sincerity: “Pray in secret; not for show.”
Confidence: “Your Father knows what you need.”
Persistence: “Ask, seek, knock.”
1. What does the Lord say? Listen and believe what the Lord says.
2. Are you willing to do your Father’s will?
Matthew 6:8 “Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
3. Are you able to accept His will regarding that need?
True prayer = seeing the need and being willing to say “LORD, Your will be done in this.”
Luke 22:42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” What is Jesus’ attitude when it comes to surrendering all to His Father?
LORD, I’m looking at this need in my life. You know it. So, I’m only asking for one thing today, Your will be done. I relinquish all that I am and have to You. Show me Your will above all I think or know. And, LORD, I don’t want my will if it interferes or clashes with Yours.
“LORD, You know we have a need for a Children’s Education Director in this meeting. Please show us Your will.”

“How important is worship to you?”
Matthew 14:22
Matthew 14:33 “And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’”
Worship isn’t about listening to different types of Christian music. Worship isn’t just singing and praying. And it isn’t dependent upon location.
Worship is an attitude and frame of mind. When I worship. I’m aware of God’s presence.
Psalm 139:6 “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.”

Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
I Corinthians 4:7 “What do you have that you did not receive?”

The Little Season

1. No hope

3. Living hope

Hebrews 6:18 “That by two unchangeable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong encourage-ment, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul…”

“Hope is the confident expectation that God will do good on my behalf. He will do all that He has promised to do.”
Amaranth: I envy you for your beauty and your perfume and the joy you bring to so many.
Rose: yes, beauty and perfume and joy. I agree. But I must perish by an early death whereas you, the amaranth, have renewed youth; an undying flower.
